Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane Season is June 1 to November 30, with mid-September being the peak season in the Gulf.

Hurricanes have winds of at least 74 mph and form over warm water (80 degrees F +}. While the eye of the storm has calm winds, the strongest winds surround this area. Tornadoes and storm surge can be devastating - do not stay in the area when officials call for an evacuation.

Hurricane watch: Be prepared! Hurricane conditions are possible.

Hurricane warning: Take action! Hurricane conditions are expected.

PREPARE FOR HURRICANE SEASON

Make A Plan

  • Create a plan with family and friends to address specific needs in your household.
  • Create a communication plan in case you and your family get separated. This includes meeting locations, phone numbers, etc.
  • Practice these plans with your family!

Register for Notifications

  • La Porte emergency notifications: alertLP.com
  • Keep your contact information up to date!

Gather Supplies

  • Store your emergency supplies in an easy-to-carry container for easy transportation.
  • A basic emergency supply kit should include the following items (but not limited to):
    • Non-perishable food
    • Water
    • First-aid kit
    • Extra clothing
    • Flashlight(s)
    • Batteries
    • Hygiene products
    • Hand-crank radio
    • Prescription medications, etc.
  • This should reflect YOUR needs!

Protect Pets

  • Include your pet(s) in your plan. Create a kit to include:
    • food and water for at least 2 weeks
    • Pet medications
    • Microchip information
    • Sturdy leash and harness
    • Medical records
    • Pet carrier
  • NOTE: some shelters do not accept pets. It is the pet owner's responsibility to find out what assistance is available in your area.

Protect Older Adults and Individuals with Disabilities

  • In your planning, think about:
    • Transportation needs, if assistance is required during an evacuation
    • How to transport assistive devices
    • A support network of individuals who can assist you, if needed
  • Provide local responders with information about your specific needs during an emergency by registering for the STEAR Program at stear.tdem.texas.gov, or dial 2-1-1.

Know Evacuation Routes

  • Refer to local guidance on current evacuation orders and routes
  • The most vulnerable areas will be evacuated first. Never ignore evacuation orders.
